The Northeast Conservative Gripe

Justin Katz

The bout of grousing that Eliot Spitzer's solicitous troubles inspired from John Derbyshire sounds all too familiar. Here are the final paragraphs, which hit the page like a fist on the desk:

All the TV talking heads are telling me, with their sternest let-him-who-is-without-sin faces on, that it would be wrong, wrong to poke fun at Spitzer, to kick him when he's down, to press for his resignation. We should reserve judgment, they tell me. We should think about his family, they tell me. It's a victimless crime, after all, they tell me.

Well, I and my family have been living for 15 months in the state this guy presides over. We've been paying the taxes and premiums, seething in the traffic jams, watching the U-Hauls heading west, dealing with surly, feather-bedded state employees. What I say to the talking heads is: The hell with all that. And what I say to Eliot Spitzer is what Oliver Cromwell said to the Rump Parliament: "Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"

Speaking of Bill ...

I think it's time for Hillary to name Elliot as her VP nominee.

Now there's a Democrat ticket:

"Clinton-Spitzer '08: While she'll busy tax-raising, he'll be busy cat-housing - and together they'll make sure that every American gets screwed one way or another ... and Bill has promised to help both of them!"

Right. And we should let all the Wall Street crooks and profiteers out of jail just because the guy who prosecuted them liked to chase a little skirt in his spare time, oui?
If he wasn't an uncharismatic, charmless, hypocritcal dork, he wouldn't have had to do business with the flesh peddlers - think Bill Clinton had to fork over cash for any of his extramarital adventures?

Rhody, it really isn't about the "skirts". I know that's what you and the RIFuture crowd want everyone to believe, that its a "private matter", that it's just about sex.

Its much, much more than that. I'd explain...but you wouldn't get it anyway.

Oh, I get it, George. If Spitzer used taxpayers' money to fund his jones, lock him up and chuck the key. But if he wants a little strange on his own dime, is it really any skin off our noses?
Let the sexual inquisition of all public officials begin.

Rhody, see...I knew you wouldn't get it.

George, it's about misuse of public funds. Don't spit on me from the roof and tell me it's raining, mmmkay?
I can take a little hoisted from his own petard satisfaction from this episode, as was the case with David Vitter...whoops, forgot that Louisiana guardian or our public morality still serves in the Senate.
