Governor Chafee May Push His Sales Tax Plan Again
Fresh from the taping of this week’s Newsmakers program for WPRI-TV (CBS 12), host Tim White tweets…
Chafee says he may resurrect his controversial sales tax plan next year. Newsmakers (with myself, Ted Nesi and Ian Donnis) will be online soon.
I hope he pushes for it every year. Then the voters can easily remember who wants to tax us more and more when election season comes.

The voters are well aware who the party of taxes, cronies, union thuggery and welfare handouts is.
They continue to re-elect them.
I agree that the two-tier plan was dumb, but what's so bad about 'lowering and broadening' the tax? I'm comfy with an all-around 5% sales tax with no exemptions. It would make RI a more attractive place for shopping than our neighbors, which spells jobs and development.

Doesn't MA exempt food and clothing from the sales tax? It's hard to see RI developing a major competitive advantage, under that condition.
Also, whatever its merits, I don't think the current administration is interested in a revenue neutral (under static assumptions) version. It's always been part of an maybe we can make this complex enough, so that no one will notice their taxes going up plan.
As a rule, if RI government is changing something, it is going to cost you more money.
