KU KLUX KLAN

Various Authors

Edited By: R. A. Guisepi

A secret terrorist organization, the Ku Klux Klan led underground resistance against the civil rights and political power of newly freed slaves during the Reconstruction period after the American Civil War. The Klan's goal was to reestablish the dominance of the prewar plantation aristocracy. It was revived in an altered form in the 20th century.

Organized in 1866 by Confederate veterans as a social club in Pulaski, Tenn., the Ku Klux Klan was restructured along political and racial lines a year later in Nashville, Tenn. Sometimes called the Invisible Empire of the South, the KKK, or the Klan, it was presided over by a grand wizard and a descending hierarchy of grand dragons, grand titans, and grand cyclopses. They took the name of the organization from the Greek word kyklos, meaning "circle," and the English word clan. Dressed in robes and hoods designed to frighten superstitious victims and to prevent identification by Federal troops, Klansmen whipped and killed freed slaves in nighttime raids. With intimidation and threats, Klansmen drove blacks and their white sympathizers out of their communities, destroying their crops and burning their houses and barns.

Thats from History World International.

From Sen. Whitehouse's speech:

History cautions us of the excesses to which these malignant, vindictive passions can ultimately lead: tumbrels have rolled through taunting crowds; broken glass has sparkled in darkened streets; “strange fruit” has hung from southern trees; even this great institution of government that we share has cowered before a tail gunner waving secret lists.

I'm not accusing Monique of anything but a distressing tendency towards flippancy.

A Nobel prize-winning economist recently concluded thus:

The takeover of the Republican Party by the irrational right is no laughing matter. Something unprecedented is happening here--and it's very bad for America.

You've been a little grumpy lately, Phil. You okay? Obama is president, Rhode Island is still controlled by Dems and all is right with the world, n'est-ce pas?

Nothing says "I'm in trouble in the polls" more than a community dinner hosted by the biggest elitist blueblood snob in RI politics. Please be careful and don't choke on that spaghetti Shelley. lol
On second thought...

Phil can a liberal like yourself call anyone else irrational without being laughed at??
Uuuuhhhh no!! lol
But I do understand your fear Phil. The only thing that can save this once great but now crumbling country is a takeover by the hard right and that scares you because you libs do not want a strong America, i.e. a strong capitalist economy in a Representative Republic. You want a marxist, godless, morally bankrupt banana republic on a national/50 state scale much like we see in the areas of this society you libs do control, the White House, Congress, public education, all media (TV, movies, print etc). Everywhere we look in those areas we see mediocrity and moral bankruptcy. Wall Street you say?? Ask liberal Jack Reed and Obama and Chris Dodd and Barney Frank about Wall Street and their fingers in that pie. Phil you libs have been working for 60 years to destroy the foundation of this once great country and you've pretty much succeeded. Monique is right. You should be happy.
For now!

PS - the Klan south was blue as blue could be DEMOCRAT and it was REPUBLICAN support in Congress that got civil rights legislation passed.
Phil you have a great day.

Phil a liberal?

His words here sound like common sense to me, maybe I've missed something.

Monique flippant?

Other than her distressing tendency to call John Diepetro (I only listen when I'm driving and am certain the arbitronimeter is off) her flippancy is a nice diversion to the life and death, all or nothing rigamarole around here.

Tim a pompous know it all?

If it walks like a duck...

Michael bored and looking for trouble on Anchor Rising?

Guilty as charged.

Monique

You forgot that the Yankees are the world champions. The world is back in order. Thanks for the concern. All is well.

michael

Thank you. I'd rather wipe my *ss with poison ivy than to have anything to do with Tim. Better to have an inflamed *sshole than have to know one.

That was before Strom Thurmond and others led way for the Dixiecrats to change the moral compass of the GOP. Today, with great historic irony, you would call the northern Republicans who champion civil rights RINO.

A hard right takeover...yeah, that's the ticket. It will leave American a more free society, just like Iran, Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan.
Given thr kind of righty rhetoric I'm used to hearing, I don't begrudge Monique a little flippancy.

Gee Rhody-rhetoric?You use a LITTLE of that from the left-plus you are a liar.

It's not always about me, Bernstein. And I hate to tell you, but my car's currently locked.
