If They Can Make Their Voice Heard in November, Then They Don't Need Immigration Reform, Do They?

Monique Chartier

It appears that immigration reform, more honestly known as amnesty (which would be the eighth in recent history, one of the bases for the heavy scepticism of claims that "We're just allowing these 12-20 million and no more!") has hit a roadblock, at least this legislative year. From Josh Gerstein at Politico.

A pair of White House meetings Thursday designed to chart a path forward for immigration reform instead spotlighted the daunting obstacles ahead — and showed why many Capitol Hill insiders believe it’s quite unlikely an immigration bill will happen this year.

After meeting with President Barack Obama, the leading Republican backing a comprehensive approach warned that a Democratic health care push could scuttle any chance of action on immigration in this Congress.

“I expressed, in no uncertain terms, my belief that immigration reform could come to a halt for the year if health care reconciliation goes forward,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said in a statement issued just after he and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) met with Obama.

And, of course, Democrats are hell-bent on passing health care via reconciliation, no matter how many billions of our money they have to spend or print on ... er, unique Medicare billing arrangements for a couple of lucky states or on completely unrelated items such as student aid.

One of the responses by advocates of illegal immigration to this set back has been, somewhat inexplicably, "Remember in November".

“One of the things that we are going to be telling the immigrant community is that they have a vital stake in the outcome of this debate, and they need to make their voices heard in November,” said Eliseo Medina of the Service Employees International Union.

(Side note: shame, shame on all of those labor union leaders who have put the best interest of the members that they purport to represent a distant second to an unspoken but clearly selfish consideration by advocating for amnesty.)

Why would an "immigrant" who can vote support immigration reform? He or she would not need immigration reform, having completed the immigration process legally and admirably and being so far along that s/he now has the right to vote. In fact, immigration "reform" is an insult to all who came here legally. Is the advocating of this course - letting voices be heard in November - further confirmation, as though any were needed, of the imperative for voter identification?

Immigrants, that is,resident aliens legally here, cannot vote by law.Obviously illegal aliens "can't" vote either.
In RI and many other states there is no requirement to prove citizenship to vote.Only a sworn statement. No one would lie under oath, would they?
Just ask Matt Jerzyk and he'll tell you that very thing. But then Matt was an SEIU organizer.Hmmm?
I didn't make this up-Matt actually told me something to the effect that laiens, legal or not, wouldn't take the legal risk to vote.
I have seen much different first hand.Going back to the early 80's.
I won't accuse Matt of lying-I think he really has no clue about this.

With the onset of President Obama's push for Amnesty, the opponents are mobilizing to stop this absolutely ridiculous move to legitimize the 20 to 30 million illegal aliens, when 15 million and upwards of citizens and residents are jobless. Anytime that reform rears its ugly head, pro-sovereignty, anti-illegal immigrants organization will get into the fight, even when the economy is sound? But to try and force through this Immigration reform, when millions of American are losing their homes, applying for begrudged unemployment benefit and lining up at food banks. Its just illogical that the Democrats would gather together with a few Republicans to slip through another law to reward illegal immigrants? How can they even dream this up under the circumstances? Most any element of enforcement has always remained underfunded and eyed by politicians who represents corporate welfare to compromise laws.

HOW CAN THEY SAY THAT THE 1986 LAW IS BROKEN, WHEN IT NEVER WAS ENFORCED? Some of the most talented, skillful politicians-ex attorneys authored that bill, including Liberal personage Ted Kennedy? No! Its just a good excuse to arrange another AMNESTY, because previous administrations failed to secure the border or even try? YOU MIGHT ASK THESE RADICAL POLITICIANS--WHY CHANGE THE 1986 IMMIGRATION BILL, WHEN YOU CAN AMEND IT?

Next weekend, 100,000 pro-amnesty supporters are expected to flood Washington to show their support for a blanket amnesty. This is why the Sanctuary State of California needs a governor such as Steve Poizner? He has promised to fight illegal immigration and cut-off benefits to the millions settled in the state as does the majority of the "Tea Party" movement. Its time with thought of our own poor, desperate people, instead of taxes being extorted in support of foreign nationals?

IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY AND STOPPING THE ILLEGAL ALIEN INVASION. ONE FLAG--ONE LANGUAGE.

Get ready for one of the biggest battles of any reform packages that the parties throw at us? Those Patriotic Americans and legal immigrants who believe in Americas sovereignty and desire the borders be firmly secure, heavy funding for immigration enforcement and NO BLANKET AMNESTY. No MORE GOVERNMENT ENTITLEMENTS FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS AND FAMILIES. Become a member of NUMBERSUSA.dot.com MANDATE E-VERIFY. Over a million members and growing. Are you ready to fight against OVERPOPULATION and CHAIN MIGRATION? JUST DO NOT LET UP AT CAUSING YOUR POLITICIANS PALPITATIONS AT 202-224-3121. Don't forget to give your state lawmakers an ultimatum; NO RE-ELECTION VOTE.

If you folks think illegal immigrants are flocking to the polls, you are drinking more kool aid than ever!

As to immigration reform, if the GOP wants to ditch it because of something like health care, it shows how strongly they believe in it (which is not strong at all) - after all, many of the business people who make the big bucks off the cheap labor - and also who benefit from downward pressure on wages - are, of course, Republican.

Of course, we must remember than many conservatives cannot understand complex situations. For instance, they have no clue that millions of LEGAL Americans of hispanic origin might be perfectly legal voters, and like all such voters, will vote in their own best interests.

You know what? I trust them!

here we go-a liberal accusing us of drinking Kool Aid.
This time, though, the liberal displays his ignorance in CAPITAL LETTERS.
I participated in a joint FBI/INS voter fraud investigation in Chicago(surprised?)in 1983 where numerous illegal aliens were found to have obtained voter registration cards and voted. They used counterfeit or stolen birth certificates to get registered. Some, but not all of those we arrested had voted. It does happen routinely.
The voter cards were useful as ID to get jobs and in one case to obtain a security clearance.
I know-I'm just lying here.Not really.
As far as Kool Aid goes,we raided a plant in Northfield,IL back in the late 70's and arrested 143 illegal aliens. The plant was overrun with vermin and if you really like ingesting rat crap.I suggest drinking Kool Aid.
Yech!!
It wasn't only illegal aliens targeted by the investigation. The Chicago political machine also utilized stewbums from the flophouses to vote multiple times.
If the resident liberal thinks I'm making this up,he oughta talk to a few people who got jammed up with Federal charges over this. They didn't have a very good day.
Oh,there are Hispanic US citizens who vote?Imagine that.Being a dumb conservative I guess I never knew such a thing.Oops-my wife is one and she votes. And not for Barry Obama either.

Posted by: joe bernstein at March 13, 2010 9:35 PM

Wow, I didn't know that Daley and Chicago pols did anything like that!

:-)

But - we are talking NOW. If anyone can show me that there is any real proof that a significant number of illegal aliens vote, I'm ready to listen.

Oh, it's another talking point you say? Of course - it sounds good and any paragraph that has the magic words in it will be honored by the radical right.

Next think you know, you'll be talking Acorn.....oh....what's that you say? The case was thrown out because the guy doctored the ONE tape they had that didn't prove anything? That the clown who set that stuff up is charged with multiple felonies? Well that sorta makes him the perfect Republican, doesn't it? Never mind all that stuff, it's the important part that matters. Obama never would have been elected if not for all those homeless people. Never mind that he got more votes among the very wealthy in this country.

"I participated in a joint FBI/INS voter fraud investigation in Chicago(surprised?)in 1983 where numerous illegal aliens were found to have obtained voter registration cards and voted."

Thank you, Joe. So is the SEIU representative quoted in the article urging a repetition of that? What else could he mean?

My point, which Stuart seems to have missed,is not that this IS happening today in RI(for example),but that in states with no verifiction of citizenship for voting, there is just no way to know. It's like letting people get a driver's license without a road test.As long as they sign a sworn statement that they can drive, what the hell, give 'em a license.
I do know that some voter registrars in this state have been illegal aliens.I learned this from a trusted source.
I'm not sure if you HAVE to be a US citizen to register voters, only that you need to be one to vote. That's a question for one of the attorneys who contribute here.
However,if illegal aliens are registrars,it does raise serious questions.
Voting by anyone other than a US citizen is prohibited by federal law.
Let's just ignore ALL federal laws, why don't we?The leftists are not consistent.

Posted by: joe bernstein at March 14, 2010 10:32 AM

In RI, it's possible to register your dog to vote. Just get a voter registration card, fill it out and mail it in. The name will be on the rolls. The laws prevent them from checking anything when you go in to vote.

If you can register a dog, why is it hard to believe that people who are not allowed to vote legally would be doing so otherwise? Heck, they're here and working illegally, do we really think that signing up to vote is "beneath them"? They're here to "live the American dream", right? Isn't voting a part of that?

Posted by: Patrick at March 14, 2010 11:21 AM

The leftists have a canned answer for everything-the tiresome little mantra that gets repeated more than HOT taco dinner fried in lard.

Posted by: joe bernstein at March 14, 2010 12:27 PM

So, let me get this straight.

To all the other conspiracies, we can now add that thousands of voters who are dogs or illegals are registering and voting in RI.

Of course, the fact that their Hero President (GW) was elected (well, actually selected) by a state which his brother ran (FL), after they spent a year or more purging legal voters off the rolls - that never concerned the right.

I honestly think the right doesn't believe in elections anyway. After all, that is the whole idea of Right Wing Authoritarians. They want to be told what to do, not have the lowly people vote.

Not only do they fix many elections, but when said elections can't be fixed they come up with theories as to why the vote didn't go their way.

Did y'all ever think that much of America looks at you and doesn't like what they see? Could it possibly be as simple as that?

After all, Rushbo and Beck are not exactly loved by the mainstream. Most Americans are much better than that.

Ignoramus Stuart probably thinks I voted for Bush.
Nope.Nor Buchanan. And certainly not Gore and Lieberman-the phony green man and the mama's boy.
Stuart has his head so far up his rectum he ought to look for a job as a proctoscope.

Many of the attacks on immigrants, immigration and "illegals" are heard -- rightly in too many cases -- as attacks on Latinos. Most Hispanics in the US were born here and they are young and growing (about 400,000 turn 18 each year). So when attacks are perceived as on "your people" or the idea of deporting tens of millions of people are bandied about, folks who are citizens (and therefore potential voters) are likely to vote for the other guy. This has mostly meant Latinos voting against Republicans. Even Puerto Ricans, born U.S. citizens, are sensitive to the tone of the immigration debate. This is one reason Mitt Romney and Rudi Giuliani lost the GOP nomination (and Tancredo, Hunter, and Thompson never had a chance). They went hard against immigration to win the GOP base but it didn't work and in fact, backfired. Most Republicans don't favor deportation or the fantasy that we are going to drive out tens of millions of people and Latinos in key states, most notably Florida when the majority of Hispanic GOP primary voters are Puerto Rican, Cuban and South American, voted (almost exclusively) for McCain. Romney and Giuliani dropped out after Florida.

So this silly post about non-citizen voters misses the real threat to the GOP. If the Party is seen as anti-immigrant, it is perceived as anti-Hispanic, which means the GOP gets smaller and smaller...forever.

If, like Irish and Italians, they remain up-for-grabs, the GOP has a shot. If they get solidified in the Dem column like African-American voters, the GOP is SOL.

Like every generation of immigrants before them, most of those here and those coming will eventually get citizenship and the vote. The strategy of making a lot of immigration illegal, especially for lower skilled workers from nearby countries, and hoping that is enough to keep them out or keep them down, has been a spectacular failure. Let's go to plan B, which is a market sensitive level of legal immigration that expands when there are jobs and contracts (like now) when there are not. That gives us more control and makes it more likely people go through the system rather than around it. Then, we need to get the people already here into the system, on the books, governed by our labor laws, fully taxed, and legal.

Posted by: GrayRiv at March 15, 2010 12:14 AM

GrayRiv, you and those who support amnesty miss the biggest point of all: the effect on our sovereignty. We amnesty these 12-20 million. And the next 20-30 million. And so on and so on. And we cease having a country.

As you have suggested the border dissolving solution of amnesty, perhaps you can also provide an answer to this question:

Why, in your view, does every other country in the world get to control their border determine who can come into their country and for how long (or not at all) except the United States?

Posted by: Monique at March 15, 2010 8:06 AM

Monique-don't you get it?Many of the "progressives"are against the concept of a sovereign USA.They are internationalists.

Posted by: joe bernstein at March 15, 2010 9:57 AM

Why can't they see that Americans DO NOT want nore will accept any form of amnesty.

Illegal aliens are destroying this Country, and one would have to be almost blind not to see this. How much longer do we have to support these illegal aliens? How much longer do we have to school their illegal alien children? How much longer are we going to let them have our jobs? How much longer are we going to put up with all the crime, stolen identities, forged documents, fake green cards? How much longer are we going to allow these illegal aliens to send money out of this Country and bring our Country down? Oh, amnesty will correct all this. WRONG! Nothing will change except we wouldn't be able to call them illegal aliens any more. Let's get rid of these illegal aliens! Let's get them back to their own Country where they belong!

I'm from Delaware, and we are pressing to get the Oklahoma State Illegal Immigration Law, HB 1804, passed here in Delaware. Three years ago we had about 32,000 illegal aliens here. Today we have about 68,000 illegal aliens here. We have had it! We want our State back!

If the Federal Government can't ENFORCE the immigration laws, then let the States do it.
