What's with the Web Site Collapse?

Justin Katz

Is anybody else concerned about the implications of Projo.com being completely collapsed all day? I can't recall that happening even to Podunk blogs in recent years, let alone a significant mainstream media Web site.

So? I thought MSM was so past tense. You bloggers are going to pick up the slack, Right?

It's not just Projo either... looks like the same thing has been happening to other Belo sites. (like dallasnews.com and belo.com)

Actually, belo.com and dallasnews.com have been working intermittenly.

I found this somewhat vague explanation earlier on the Projo news blog, which is still working:

Projo.com, the Web site of The Providence Journal, has been offline since about 7 a.m. Friday. It's not known when the site will be back online.

However, Projo.com's blogs, which run on different servers, are not affected. The newspaper and Web site staff continue to post the latest Rhode Island news, which can be viewed through http://newsblog.projo.com/, or via our Twitter page.

The most recent news is below this post.

It looks like there has been a huge number of denial of service attacks (DoS) on news services over the past few days. The interactivity through comments pages and such has created additional vulnerability. I think they need to patch their security.

Lots of hacks are originating out of Russian states.

Who said the Cold War is over? The Russians and the Chicoms are only using different tactics.
