"Un pueblo unido no mas sera vencido!"

Justin Katz

Whoa. Listen to the audio provided on the Providence Journal page to which Monique links in the previous post. The above quoted line — used to rally momentary resistance to police instructions — is sounding more and more like a threat than encouragement:

Outside the State House, [Providence City Councilman Miguel Luna] said, "When you have the top clergy in the state of Rhode Island and they can't get through to him [Governor Carcieri], this is the option left."

"Can't get through to him," because, you know, there is only one acceptable course of action, and they will demand that it be taken. Rather than set fear to work in shaken public officials, such attempts at intimidation ought strengthen resolve and hasten implementation of the governor's plans.

Comments

Justin,

Absolutely agree! Must warm the heart of Bishop Tobin and his god squad when they are cited by those attempting physical intimidation on behalf of illegal aliens.
Intimidation won't work though. Gov. Carcieri sees his state and his nation going down the third world drain and has too much love of country and state to let anti-American latino whores like Mikey Luna get to him.

I hope they realize that nobody is going to throw the first punch against them but if they throw one it won't be the last. You'll have violence in the streets. Lots of it.

The VAST majority of people in this state and around the country have had enough. The Progs can think this is a 50/50 issue but it's much closer to an 80/20 and most of that 20% is the illegals.

This is the result of irresponsible voices in the clergy, legislature, city council, and the "advocacy"community.
Pichardo,Diaz,Almeida,Segal,Levesque,
Handy,Luna,Pablo Rodriguez,George Nee,Pat Crowley,Matt Jerzyk,The Hispanic Minister's group,the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese,the Rabbi,the Council of Churches,Mayor Cicilline,Chief Esserman,Rachel Miller,Juan Garcia,Rick Martinez just to name a few.Steven Brown is in a class by himself.As is Pigpen Bakst.
I hope this doesn't descend into generalized violence because that usually results in some innocent person being victimized.
Disrespect for the law condoned and advocated by so-called respectable members of society cannot have a good result.

Greg,

According to the following on Ocean State Republican, there's likely to be political warfare between the unions and the illegals. I wouldn't be totally surprised to someday see it escalate into violence between the unions and illegals.

“It is with similar dismay that Rhode Island’s public-sector unions (and their dues-paying memberships) will soon find themselves rendered 'second-class' citizens within the political power structure of Rhode Island. The unions’ campaign donation money and membership will eventually be swamped and succumb to the rising tide of a growing constituency of dependents demanding that the newly fixed (if not actually shrinking) 'pie' of taxpayer dollars be allocated increasingly to them — at the expense of public-sector union pay, benefits, and pensions.”

“Collectivists hate the whole notion of patriotism and national sovereignty (and religion, for that matter) because those “identities” compete with their preferred identities – and they’re all about 'identity politics.' But their preferred identities revolve around race, gender and economic class. Anything to make people not consider themselves sovereign individuals, but victimized groups harboring resentment – and into the void step the collectivist politicians promising to make it better by enacting Marxist-collectivist wealth redistribution schemes … the citizenship status of illegal aliens is irrelevant; they are ‘workers of the world’ and so we who ‘happen to’ reside in this ‘rich’ country should be handing them welfare checks without regard to their legal or citizenship status … TO COLLECTIVISTS LIKE MY BROTHER AND HIS ILK IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, WELFARE KNOWS NO BOUNDS, AND NO BOUNDARIES.”

The Don was spoiling for a fight, and he got it. This whole dispute is about Carcieri's ego and thrusting his chest out for the talk radio crowd.
Guess we should all thank God Lou Dobbs is not on the Capital Police force. Those guys showed some discipline yesterday in defusing the situation, and deserve the commendation they're getting here. Lou's trigger finger would've gotten itchy.

Yeah, rhody, and he found an issue that resonates. Go read the responses to Projo's "Should he rescind the order?" poll. The fringe progressive wacko opinion is virtually absent. You have to go back over to RIFuture blog to find it.

If The Don wants to spend all his political capital on this instead of on the budget crisis, that's his perogative. But being a hero on the national talk show circuit isn't helping this state out one iota.

Posted by: rhody at April 4, 2008 1:31 PM

Rhody! This IS about the budget. The state cannot keep up with its roads and bridges. It can bearly respond to a minor snow storm.
The State of Rhode Island should not be a hospitality center for those who drain our economy. It has nothing to do with compassion. We can't afford it!

Unfortunately, though Rhody, you may get what you wish. The Governor has a track record of backing down when faced with resistance. (Remember the 1000 jobs?)

...and the "furlough"...

Posted by: George at April 4, 2008 1:53 PM

George,

The governor hasn't backed down at all on the 1000 jobs. At all! What has slowed the pace is the union bumping process. Yes he did back down on his original proposed furlough idea but he will not back down this time. IMO if the unions do not come to some agreement with the governor and soon methinks the Executive order pen will come out again and the governor will force a shutdown of the government to save money. It'll end up in court but Carcieri has had enough of the games. Having heard the governor on the radio this morning there is no way he'll ever back off the illegals issue. He's not getting intimidated by the white noise he's getting really pissed off and angry which is very good news.

rhody,

The budget is the catalyst for the governor's actions re: illegal aliens.
Don't kid yourself, the support the governor has received from the public on this illegal alien issue has given him major mojo heading into the budget wars.

Tim, thanks. That's encouraging. I think he'll win big if he sticks to his guns.

Posted by: George at April 4, 2008 10:57 PM

Tim is, of course, correct. Public support for his very modest E.O. has been overwhelmingly positive and bipartisan. Kind of makes me wish he'd have gone a little farther with the order. There's always next time.

PS I'm always been pretty good when it came to picking up patterns, for instance, the phrase:

"Un pueblo unido no mas sera vencido!"

It reminds me a lot of the famous opening sequence of the old sitcom "Laverne & Shirley":

"...Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!"
